Audio Excerpts

These excerpts are in MP3 audio format.

  • The Corps of Discovery
This recording is from the premiere performance of The Last Voyage of Captain Meriwether Lewis on Saturday, November 6, 1999. The chorus heard in the recordings is The Penn State Glee Club and the orchestra is The Castalia Quartet. The soloist is Mark Whatley as Meriwether Lewis. In this song Lewis is recruiting the men who will become the Corps of Discovery.

The following three selections from the opera were recorded at a live concert with the Penn State Glee Club on October 19, 2002, with Tamara Haskin singing the role of Mary, Leonard Rowe in the role of York, Brett Hyberger as Captain William Clark, and Norman Spivey as Captain Meriwether Lewis. The accompanists are Tim Crawford and Michael Conigliaro.

  • Love Duet from Act One
In this scene Mary, a slave girl, has come to say goodbye to York on the day he sets off West with Captains Lewis and Clark. Captain Clark has just marched down to the river to meet Meriwether Lewis. Alone for a moment, Mary mocks the Captain while unknown to her York playfully sneaks up behind her.

  • The Song of the West
Captain Clark, surrounded by "the nine young men from Kentucky" and the local townsfolk, fires their imagination with his description of the expedition's mission.

  • The Bitterroots
The last obstacle before reaching the Pacific Ocean, the crossing of the Bitterroot Mountains proved to be one of the most harrowing experiences of the entire journey. Finally reaching the Snake River, Meriwether Lewis becomes introspective and York ponders his future freedom.
