Description
Music from a global perspective comes alive for all ensemble directors and classroom teachers through this hands-on music teaching workshop. Participants will perform, explore, and dialogue for a deeper understanding of musical practices from around the globe. Through multiple experiences ranging from in-depth discussion to rehearsals and music making attendees will begin to develop a framework for student-centered experiences in multicultural and world musics. This workshop offers music educators unique opportunities in choral, general, and instrumental music.
Participants will explore the world of music through:
• Daily seminars with keynote speaker Mr. Nick Page a world renowned song leader and director of the Mystic Chorale of Boston, Massachusetts
• Rehearsals and workshops with Dr. Tony Leach the director of the Essence of Joy choral program, including a special performance with Essence of Joy at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the ArtsTM
• World music lesson planning with Dr. Atesh Soneborn the Associate Director of Smithsonian Global Sound© , including guided attendance of performances at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts (TM) and Certification in the Teaching of World Music from the Smithsonian Institution
• Daily mini-workshops on various themes including in-depth cultural experiences, song writing and arranging, early childhood music experiences, reading sessions, drumming, and much more!
Bios
Nick Page is a composer, conductor, author, and song leader. From 1983 to 1986, Mr. Page was a conductor with the Chicago Children’s Choir and he currently directs the Mystic Chorale of Boston as well as leading sings and workshops throughout the Americas and Europe. He has served as a guest conducted at many festivals and concert venues including Carnegie Hall. Mr. Page is the author of three books for teachers including his Sing with Us songbook (Hal Leonard) and Sing and Shine On (World Music Press). His articles have appeared in numerous music journals and he has over fifty published choral pieces from Hal Leonard, Boosey & Hawkes, Transcontinental, and World Music Press. Mr. Page has a Music Education degree from Ithaca College and a Masters in Education from Lesley College.
Anthony Leach teaches courses in choral music education. A member of the Penn State faculty since 1994, he also conducts the University Choir and Essence of Joy. He holds degrees from Lebanon Valley College and Penn State. A native of Washington, D.C., Leach has fourteen years of teaching experience in the public schools of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York. He also has served on the adjunct faculties of Shippensburg, Catholic, and Howard universities. Leach is national chairman of the Multicultural and Ethnic Perspectives Repertoire and Standards Committee for the American Choral Directors Association. Leach is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, American Choral Directors Association, American Guild of Organists, and the Gospel Music Workshop of America.
Smithsonian Global Sound© has been dubbed by The New York Times as “the ethnographic alternative to iTunes” and encompasses 40,000 tracks of world music, streaming from the Archives and Research Center for Ethnomusicology in India, the International Library of African Music in South Africa, and the nine record labels of the Smithsonian Folkways collections. The collection also includes prodigious liner notes, feature articles, multimedia shorts, and powerful search tools.
This workshop, presented in conjunction with the Smithsonian Global Sound© (SGS) teacher network, will offer a hands-on approach to creating lesson plans and activities for K–12 music classrooms and ensembles, using the SGS archive. Created to coincide with The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts™, this course will give the participants an opportunity to study musical styles and genres from the SGS collection and then attend the Arts Festival to enjoy live performances. In addition, the participants will earn a Certificate in the Teaching of World Musics from the Smithsonian Institution.

Teaching Jazz for Music Educators - Summer 2009
Music educators are invited to attend a four day jazz instructional and pedagogical workshop to study with jazz masters and jazz educators. Jazz principles, history, methods, materials, and improvisational techniques for practical applications in the classrooms of Pennsylvania middle school through college level instrumental and choral music educators will be presented. This workshop is available for Penn State graduate credit. If you are a music teacher who holds an undergraduate degree in music and wish to register for the June 22-26, 2009 summer course "Teaching Jazz for Music Educators" for 2 graduate credits through Penn State, follow the procedures outlined below.
TO REGISTER:
You will need to complete the on-line "Graduate Admission Application." The web address for the application is listed below. Penn State now requires a $30 application fee for submitting a non-degree application. On the first page of the web site select "Apply Now or Continue Application in Process."
Select one of the choices on the next screen and proceed in completing the application for graduate non-degree status for summer 2009. Even though the course is being held in Hershey, PA you must list "University Park" as the campus location on the Graduate Admission Application because the credit course is being offered by the University Park campus. Do NOT select the Hershey campus as the campus location for this application.
Once you submit the on-line application, Graduate Enrollment Services office will let you know when you've been approved as a graduate non-degree student for summer 2009 for University Park campus. At that point, you can either register on your own through the eLion web site (www.eLion.psu.edu ) or contact Lisa Stamm at lkm3@psu.edu to register you for Music 597A (Jazz4Teachers) for 2 credits.
The six-digit schedule number needed for eLion registration of Music 597A is 331999.

Bel Canto Can Belto: Musical Theatre Voice Workshop

Bel Canto Can Belto is a three day vocal intensive designed to acquaint singers and voice teachers with the techniques specific to singing for musical theatre, including the still controversial style called belting. Topics covered include: identifying the sounds currently heard on Broadway, how these sounds are produced, differences and similarities between male and female vocal technique, how to make appropriate vocal choices for musical theatre repertoire, how to keep musical theatre voices healthy, how to teach sounds you might not be able to make yourself. All participants have an opportunity to "try out" these sounds themselves in a supportive environment.
